Datil Pepper
Common Name: Datil
Species: Capsicum chinense Jacquin
Size: 1-3 inches long, 1/2 to 1 inch wide
Shape: Elongated, wrinkled and pointed at the tip
Color: Yellowish green to golden yellow
Scoville Heat Units: 100,000 to 250,000
Otherwise Known As: Mindoran pepper
Grown In: St. Augustine, Florida
Commonly Used In: Habanero hot sauces, salsas, chutneys, marinades
Some Random Facts: Minorcans are Europeans from the Island of Minorca, in the Mediterranean. Settling in North Florida in the 1770's, it is thought they picked up Datil peppers from Cuba or the West Indies on their way to the "Sunshine State." The Datil pepper is grown almost exclusively there.
