The Kalahari Pepper Company
Our story began in the late 1970's when a friend of ours traveled to Botswana on Safari to experience the essence of Africa. Often during the expedition, his professional guides would pick and eat handfuls of tiny red chilis. These flavorful and extremely hot chili peppers were the unique African Peri Peri Peppers. In many areas of Africa the Peri Peri's or "Pili Pili" as the 15th century Portuguese spice traders named them, can be found growing across the wilds of Africa near Mozambique and Botswana. To this day the indigenous people commonly use Peri Peri's in traditional African recipes and remedies. A handful of these flavorful chilies were brought back to The Untied States where they were carefully cultivated over the next twenty years in a small Southern California garden.
By the mid 1990's, the garden, which began as a hobby, was producing a prized cache of Peri Peri Peppers. Unaware at that time that the garden had created the largest and finest African Peri Peri seed bank in North America, we knew that we were in possession of something very special, but what?
In July 1996, while sitting on our front porch overlooking The San Francisco Bay, Jane and I began to discuss the seemingly endless possibilities of the unique Peri Peri Pepper. Armed with only an idea and a sack full of highly coveted Peri Peri Pepper seeds, we embarked on a Safari of our own, out into the uncharted wilderness of The Gourmet Foods Industry. And so began The Kalahari Pepper Company.
Kalahari Pepper Company is currently the only commercial grower of the African Peri Peri Pepper in the United States, and has been awarded numerous first place awards for our African Rhino Peri Peri SauceTM. We are continuing to expand and develop new Peri Peri based gourmet products for our many loyal customers around the world.
